Have you ever been on the road and all of a sudden didn’t know where you were? It happens to me all the time, especially living in Los Angeles where you are attempting to keep away from traffic by taking the side streets. In Los Angeles, the only real method of transportation is a car. Without one, you won’t get far relying on folks to take you places.

Image via Wikipedia

An in dash DVD GPS system is the ideal sort of technology you want if you’re new to the city of Angels. Since there are numerous ways to keep away from traffic in Southern California, and since there are so many freeways going east, west, north, and south, these navigation systems would lead you to your final destination in the suitable manner you want.

Whether it is the shortest distance in minutes, shortest miles, avoiding freeways, these particular navigation systems are made with the latest technology to satisfy your traveling needs. The in dash DVD GPS system features a DVD receiver built in. This makes it practical for those wishing to get a DVD player for the automobile when you can ultimately have both working in one system.

Many of these kinds of navigation systems have a CD and MP3 receiver as well along with a regular USB cord you can plug in your car for power. Most manufacturers that offer such a system also supply a Bluetooth as well for your safety of speaking on the cellphone and driving at the same time.

Plugging in your I-Pod or MP3 player shouldn’t be difficult as these diverse systems are supposed to do exactly what you need in a car, get good directions, play your favourite music, as well as play your favourite DVD’s.

What more can you ask for? In the event you do not want to go with a cheap in dash DVD GPS system, I highly recommend are Kenwood and Alpine. From what I have seen, Kenwood seems to offer the very best quality. Alpine would probably fall next based on my own personal preferences.

A car GPS system can get you from point A to point B in the easiest, most efficient way possible. Some of the newer devices can even detect and circumvent traffic tie-ups, accidents and any thing else that may stand in your way. For everyday travel, or going places you have never been before, a car GPS system can be a big asset to your trip.

The first thing people wonder when shopping for a GPS is which one is the best. While there is no single answer to this question, there are some considerations to take in to account and techniques that you can use to get the best deal when you decide to buy. Let’s take a look at what we need to know to ensure that we get the best device for our needs at the lowest price.

There are three major makers in the GPS market – TomTom, Garmin and Magellan. Outside of that, there are other companies that don’t specialize in these devices but do produce a small line of them such as Poloroid. In general, you are best off with choosing from the top three brands as you know that they have put a lot of research and development in to perfecting their products. Within this group, there are literally hundreds of different models to select from at every price point from $70 on up to $500 and more.

The best car GPS system for you will be the one that has the features that you need at a price that is within your budget. The features available on these devices vary widely. You can get everything from voice controlled navigation to live traffic updates on modern units. By deciding what you need and what you can live without, it makes it easier to narrow down the choices and avoid spending too much. For everyday travel, even the lower end devices are packed with enough features to keep the average driver happy. If you drive professionally, it may be wise to invest in a higher end device with all of the bells and whistles.

As a smart shopper, you will want to be aware of the hidden cost of owning one of these devices. One important thing to keep in mind is that maps are generally preloaded on to the devices. You will want to make sure that you are getting a device that has current maps included or else you could wind up paying extra for a map update. Traffic service is available on many units, however it can cost extra as well. In some cases, you can take advantage of a free trial that comes with your unit to save more.

GPS Navigation Buyers Guide

There are six things you need to know before you buy a GPS navigation system for your car or truck. What do most people use a car GPS for? The most popular use is to get turn-by-turn directions while driving from point A to point B. Some popular car navigational units are the Magellan Roadmates, the Tomtom, the Garmin Nuvi units, and the new Navigon gps units.

1 – Screen Size and sound are important. Especially while driving. The screen should be readable and bright, Also Make sure the buttons are big enough for your fingers, so that you aren’t pressing multiple buttons at the same time. Vehicles are noisier than you may think. Driving noise can make it difficult to hear weak audio. Be sure to check out the sound quality to make sure you can understand what is being said. It should be clear and loud so that you can hear it in your vehicle.

2 – Downloadable Maps and memory. Most gps units come with maps built in. A lot of them can download maps as well. It is a good idea to puchase one that has the ability to download maps, so that you map doesn’t get outdated.

Memory – the more memory the gps unit has, the more locations, waypoints, landmarks, and maps you can save.

3 – The time it takes a GPS to find and display information. This depends on the number of channels a GPS has. The more channels the unit has the better the reception. Take this into consideration. You don’t want to have to pull over and wait for it to get map data if you make a wrong turn.

4 – Does the unit speak street names? This is very helpful. If it does not say the street names and it tells you to turn right. You may have to glance at the unit to check the street name. This can be dangerous.

5 – What type of batteries are used with the GPS? Are they normal rechargeable AA batteries or are they special manufacturer batteries? Also how long do they last.

6 – Bluetooth is great for those who need to use cell phones while driving, With Bluetooth the driver can make and receive hands-free calls through the unit’s speaker and microphone, and view their telephone book and access caller ID on the screen. What an amazing feature. Of course blue-tooth enabled units are little more expensive.

Those are the six things you need to know before you buy a GPS.

Here’s a quick note about GPS mapping data:

All Magellan Garmin and NAVIGON GPS units use NAVTEQ mapping data, while TomTom uses Tele Atlas. I’ve done research online and found that both NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas are both good and I would not base my decision on which mapping data the gps uses.
