Are you going, “Over the river and through the woods” to grandmother’s house? If so, you may be worrying about whether or not you can get there, especially if you’re not familiar with the territory. Worry no more. The Garmin Nuvi 255 is at your service, and all you have to do is enter the address of the destination. Begin your trip, and even if you’re driving all the way from California to Florida, you’ll get turn by turn directions so that you’ll show up at grandma’s house right on time — or even ahead of time.

That’s the beauty of the car GPS. No matter how far you happen to be going, you will always get to where you’re going and you’ll do it in the fastest way possible.

What You Get

When you are driving on the way to grandma’s house, you are going to be taking many roads and some roads turn into other roads, and it can all get very confusing very quickly. If you have your Garmin Nuvi 255, however, you will know exactly what exits to take and you’ll know every turn before you ever even get there. It takes all the guesswork out of driving, but some GPS devices do so much more.

In addition to its GPS features, there’s a lot more to the Garmin nuvi 260W. For example, when you leave your car, take it with you. You’ll be able to find your way back to your car from distant locations, such as if you have to park at a sporting arena or shopping mall. If you go hiking, you can find your way back to your car when you’re finished without fear of getting lost. With this type of GPS device, you’ll never be lost no matter where you are.

This GPS device also gives you a lot more. For example, it will record your speed, and it will tell you that about what time you should arrive. This is beneficial for a number of reasons.

Let’s say that you are on the last stretch of your trip to granny’s. Your Garmin nuvi 260W says that you are going to arrive at 5:30 P.M., but you’re not due until 6:00 P.M. That means you’ll have thirty minutes to play with to get something to eat or to stop and get flowers for her before you show up.

Mapping capability

The great thing about buying a GPS for your car is that many of them are just take out of the package and go products. That means they already have the maps and everything you need built in. If you are looking for an ATM machine between here and the next town, you’ll know the minute one comes into range. That can not only save time, it’s the most convenient way to travel.

Don’t risk traveling with only a vague idea of how you’re going to get where you’re going. Instead, using a GPS device like the Garmin nuvi 260W or a similar model will give you turn-by-turn directions right to your destination. You don’t have to know certain parts of town (and don’t have to worry about it), because you’ll never have to worry about getting lost. The right GPS device will get you where you need to go, as quickly as possible.

ON THE MOVE WITH GPS

This holiday season, you should be thinking about buying more than shirts, ties, and socks as gifts for those you care about. With so many uses for GPS navigation systems, you will be able to find a gift that is not only interesting and exciting, but is also a functional tool that can be used while driving, walking, boating, camping, skiing, hiking, and in one’s home office.

Below are some great gift ideas that can be given to anyone who is on the move.

GPS Laptop Receiver
– A GPS laptop receiver is perfect for college students, those who use their laptops when traveling or while on vacation, and also for those who work from home. The card is inserted easily into the computer which can be used for determining location, driving directions, maps, and coordinates. Since it is wireless, it can be taken just about everywhere that you and your laptop can go.

GPS Watches – This is the gift for the person who has everything. This watch is equipped to not only tell time, but also give coordinates for exact location, measures distance, calculates speed, determines altitude, and downloads maps.

Microsoft GPS – This car GPS navigation system from Microsoft gives directions in both visual and verbal options. This is a great option that will provide a safer environment and an easier way to find a location.

GPS handheld device – A GPS handheld device is the perfect gift for college students who are on the move. If traveling overseas or to another state for extended study, being able to find places on foot or while driving will give students that extra confidence needed when in a strange place. These devices can also be used to store maps, locations, waypoints, and other pieces of information that may be needed.

GPS with Bluetooth Capabilities
– If you know someone who is a fan of Bluetooth technology, then a wireless Bluetooth GPS navigation system may be the gift for them. This technology will allow people to use GPS equipment without having to plug into a computer. It is perfect for those who travel often and may not be close to a computer.

Other great gift ideas include GPS units for golfers, fishermen, and other outdoor activities.

If the person you are shopping for already has a GPS, you should look into buying GPS accessories including adapters, power supply, antennas, battery packs, remotes, and many other accessories that may be needed. You can also give a travel supply pack that includes batteries, charger, adapter, and extra cable.

When you give the gift of GPS, you are also giving the gift of safety. Those who enjoy outdoor activities will feel a little safer participating when they have a GPS tracking device with them. This little device can be of assistance when lost or injured.

As you can see, a GPS navigational system is a great gift for a wide variety of people. From stay at home moms to those who travel frequently for business, a GPS unit is functional, practical, and fun at use anytime.

What To Do When Your GPS Map Is Wrong

Use NAVTEQ Map Reporter™ To Make GPS Navigation Better For Everyone

Have you ever had an instance where you were navigating to a destination using your GPS in your car and it showed the wrong directions on the dashboard map or you knew of a shortcut because a new road has been opened and was not showing up on your GPS?

Did you ever look up an address and found it wasn’t on the map or it showed it on the wrong side of the street on the screen on your GPS system in your car?

What do you do in those instances where you know you have the latest maps loaded in your GPS but they are still wrong or missing data?

Most of us do nothing, just shrug it off and move on down the road, but there is a way of updating that information on all GPS navigation maps.

There is a central GPS map service called Navteq that manages the maps for all in dash automotive GPS systems and most portable units, their service is also used for many online map services.  They have an online tool where you can update their map information with what you know, thereby helping all of us that use our GPS for navigation.

It’s called NAVTEQ Map Reporter™ and it works pretty easily.  To start out go to their page here –>  Report GPS Discrepancies Then zoom into the area you want to edit, select what type of information should be updated from the list below and send them the new GPS info.  In the end I think if we all thought about our fellow GPS Navigator and took the time to update any errors or omissions on GPS maps we all would be better for it, I know I would appreciate knowing about a quicker route to get from point A to point B , finding a closer store or getting more accurate information about my GPS destination.

Address

  • address is missing
  • address appears in the wrong location
  • address should be removed

Point of Interest (POI) (bank, store, etc.)

  • POI is missing
  • POI has incorrect details (location,category,phone number,etc.)
  • POI should be removed

Road and Road Feature

  • road is missing
  • road is in the wrong place or has the wrong shape
  • road should be removed
  • road name is missing or wrong

Traffic Restriction

  • add restriction
  • incorrect restriction
  • remove restriction

There may be some instances where the map on the map reporter tool is already updated, that probably means it is time to get updated map information from the manufacture of your GPS.

If you own a business and you do not see it listed on the GPS map, you should add it as many people are already driving and using their GPS to search what’s close by not only business category but also by brand.
